Here we go again… I have internet again, God Bless Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn for inventing it!
So after I was playing Rambo with the M30 machine gun at the Cu Chi Tunnels I made my way to see Vietnam’s best beaches and travelled to the island of Phu Quoc. When you open a Vietnamese tourist catalogue and you see those golden sandy beaches there with the palm trees leaning above the ocean, those images will probably be from Phu Quoc. The island is located west of Ha Tien which is a border town with Cambodia.
I arrived after a smooth domestic flight from Saigon and got to my hostel after a short taxi trip. The hostel – the Station 9 – was quite a disappointment so I switched to a nice homestay rom there. Station 9 is a proper party factory for teenagers and unfortunately too big for the staff to pay attention on important details. So from there, the next morning I moved to a very nice homestay: the Son Vinh Guest House. I loved this new place where I had my own little bungalow and managed to meet some nice folks. The place is 3-400 metres from the long beach, you can rent a scooter directly there, plus if you want to book any travel or attraction, you just walk a few metres to the offices nearby.
The long beach in Phu Quoc is stunning, like I said in the beginning golden sandy beach, palm trees, loads of restaurants and bars where you can enjoy the sunset and a lot of resorts.
The reason that I aborted mission there and didn’t stay 9 days what I originally planned was I quickly learned that diving is not really fun here. You can do that but the depth of the dives are max 12 metres, you can’t see anything interesting in terms of corals of animals and the visibility is very low, plus it’s highly overpriced. So although I am a proper beach bum, I felt I would be bored here going only to beaches as a solo traveller so I decided to move on to see the majestic Angkor Wat.
On my last full day on the island I met 2 good guys from Barcelona and 2 nice girls from Finland. We went to check out the remote Ong Lang beach with our scooters and had good fun.
Again, this place is great for honeymooners, and families with kids who just want to relax and enjoy the absolutely waveless 30 degree warm water of the South Chinese sea.
